Covid-19: towards a plateau in the contaminations of the eighth wave?

Although the indicators are low in terms of the spread of the disease, the data in the hospital remains high.

Since the Covid-19 vaccine reminder campaign for the most vulnerable began on October 3, are we already approaching a pause on the contamination front? This is at least what the latest figures reported by Public Health France suggest.

Until October 19, 63,031 new positive cases of Covid-19 have been detected in the last 24 hours, a reduction of 7.2% in seven days. Slight drop, but confirmed for other indicators. The incidence rate, which refers to the number of infected people per 100,000 people, fell 0.1% in seven days, and the positivity rate, or the proportion of tests that come back positive, fell 0.9%.

The beginning of a plateau for contaminations?

If we look at the trend of the last week, even a plateau seems to be emerging. Since October 10, when 56,819 new cases were detected, the trend has been downward, showing a slightly downward curve. And as the Covidtracker site points out, the case growth rate fell below 0% for the first time on October 12, the first since September 6.

However, a territory-by-territory analysis is necessary. As our colleagues at the Huffington Post have pointed out, it is the northeast of France that is currently the most affected by this eighth wave, unlike the southwest.

Data continues to rise at the hospital

This eighth wave, measured and that until now has not caused a return of the measures to curb the epidemic, nevertheless continues to advance in the hospital. For the impact of the drop in pollution to be felt in the hospital system, it takes an average of ten days.

The various indicators calculated by Public Health France in this area are all increasing, with the exception of the number of emergency visits. Hospitalizations in the last seven days increased by 3.4% and intensive care admissions by 3.6%. More worrying still, deaths have increased by 19.7% in one week.

On October 17, the symbolic milestone of 1,000 patients in critical care was reached. “Each wave has its face and those who are hospitalized in critical care at the moment, a thousand in France, including 34 in the University Hospital of Bordeaux, are mainly frail people (elderly and immunocompromised) whom I call the invisibles of the eighth wave. “, underlined in 20 minutes the infectologist at the University Hospital of Bordeaux Denis Malvy.

“We are still waiting for the plateau of this eighth wave,” concludes the expert.
