“When I go out I have to take my syringe, my probe…”. For several weeks, Eva, 19, has been telling her daily life on TikTok, using the social network’s codes and her trends. She was born with a malformation of her esophagus called esophageal atresia.
“The remaining end of my esophagus went into my trachea, so when I swallowed it went into my lungs,” he says.
“For ten years they tried to patch me up: they removed a piece of my colon to try to do DIY and reconstruct my esophagus, a muscle in my back, a muscle in my shoulder, a piece of my stomach as well,” he lists.
It feeds at night, while it sleeps.
At night he prepares his liquid food and keeps it in two pockets. “I plug in and sleep all night. In the morning it rings, and I know that the bag is empty and I just have to turn it off,” says the young woman.
Eva, however, also eats “by mouth” every day, mostly for pleasure and, among other things, to exercise her jaw, she says on TikTok. To do this, she places a container on her neck, where a cervicotomy left a hole, and the ingredients come out through there.
“The first thing I do is when there are big chunks, I cut them off first,” he explains, “and when I’m done, I go and empty the bowl into the toilet.”
“I have the joy of living”
Today he shares his daily life on social networks, but admits that it has not always been easy. “In the beginning, when I ate with friends, it sometimes took me 20 minutes to get the courage to take out my plate and eat,” she explains.
“I have never had problems with my relationships, frankly, you get used to it quickly, I never have friends or even friends who disliked my gastrostomy or anything,” Eva adds.
The young woman receives the AAH (subsidy for disabled adults) and now earns a little money on TikTok. “The comments in general are really questions (…), they are very kind, there are some that make me laugh,” she says.
“I did it on TikTok because I’m tired of hiding, of hiding my gastrostomy, my cervicotomy, which when I always eat it is with a drink… I have the joy of living and the desire to live, and I think that in my videos people see it.” go,” says Eva, who concludes with a smile: “I can still eat tacos, have a friend, go to the movies and I really like you, except that in the end I’m not very like you.”
