A three-year-old boy died after contracting cholera, the Mayotte prefecture announced this Wednesday, May 8. This is the first death since the beginning of this epidemic that began in mid-March in this department and infected several dozen people.
“Today the first child died,” writes the prefecture of the Regional Health Agency (ARS) in a joint press release. “The boy lived in the Koungou district, where several cases of cholera had been identified in recent weeks.”
The prefecture indicates that “intervention teams went to the scene to treat people close to the child”, while 58 cases of cholera have already been confirmed, a total multiplied by 4 in just over a week, according to a count by La 1st.
In this context, the Minister of Health, Frédéric Valletoux, is expected to be present on Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10.
