“It was horrible”: the testimony of Dylan, whose son hospitalized for bronchiolitis in Paris had to be transferred to Lille

This Wednesday, a delegation of caregivers will go to the Elysée Palace and intends to deliver to Emmanuel Macron a letter signed by 7,000 people, warning about the situation of pediatric services in France.

Hospitalized in Paris for bronchiolitis, Dylan’s son was moved more than 200 kilometers from the family home in Lille on Monday night when doctors decided to admit him to intensive care. An incomprehensible decision for the 29-year-old father, who reported a “horrible” situation to the BFMTV teams, when his son was barely 20 days old when he was transferred.

“The doctor comes to see me at 2 in the morning. He tells me: ‘the little boy has to leave here.’ Dylan.

Tense situation in pediatrics throughout France

This exceptional decision is explained by the difficulties experienced by the pediatric services of French hospitals. All metropolitan areas are currently on epidemic alert for bronchiolitis, with the exception of Corsica. A situation that negatively affects hospitals, where services are saturated.

In the week of October 17 to 23 alone, 4,311 children went to the emergency room for bronchiolitis and 1,405 had to be hospitalized. It is in Île-de-France, where Dylan’s son was hospitalized, that the situation is most worrying. Another 30 children were transferred to another region.

“My priority is my son”

After the announcement of his son’s transfer, Dylan initially opposed the decision. “It wasn’t possible,” he said. Before resigning, not without questioning the material conditions.

“I told myself that transportation is dangerous for a baby. Even for an adult who is hospitalized it is not easy. I asked to be transferred by helicopter, so that the little one does not suffer. No, let him be comfortable. But I saw that in the end, he left with the Samu, ”she detailed.

Therefore, it was only that the father of the family returned home. “No one cried at night, no one asked me for a bottle. It was horrible.”

Dylan canceled all his appointments to join his wife and son in Lille on Tuesday. “My priority is my son. I’d rather be unemployed than see my son like this,” he told BFMTV.

Event scheduled for Wednesday

Bronchiolitis is a “pulmonary respiratory infection of the small bronchi due to a very widespread and highly contagious respiratory virus,” the Ministry of Health evokes on its site. The disease is caused by a winter virus, called RSV, which affects the bronchioles, the tiny bronchi of very young children.

Several symptoms should alert parents, such as the presence of a dry cough and a gene in the breath. It can also cause wheezing and a rapid rate of inspiration and expiration.

This Wednesday, a delegation of caregivers must go to the Elysee, and intends to deliver to Emmanuel Macron a letter signed by 7,000 people, alerting the pediatric services in France. On Sunday, October 23, the Minister of Health, François Braun, had declared on BFMTV the release of 150 million euros and an “action plan” for pediatrics.
