never seen. A young Italian woman has been successfully operated on for a 70-kilogram tumor in her abdomen, the Molinette hospital in Turin announced on Tuesday. The tumor, due to ovarian cancer, obstructed the patient’s abdomen and prevented her from breathing normally, compressing her lungs.
“There is no precedent in the medical literature for a tumor mass of such weight. It weighed more than the patient herself,” the facility said in a news release.
The young woman had arrived a few weeks ago in a serious condition at the Molinette hospital emergency room, immediately intubated and put on artificial respiration.
Surgeons first drained 52 liters of fluid before removing the solid part of the tumor, which weighed 25 kilos. Admitted to intensive care, the patient recovered quickly, to the point of being transferred four days later to a diet and nutrition unit. Since then he has been able to return home.
