Bronchiolitis outbreak: baby must wait 13 days for surgery

Little Robin, suffering from a serious illness, quickly needed liver surgery. But the pediatric services, overwhelmed by the bronchiolitis epidemic, postponed his operation.

The consequences of the bronchiolitis epidemic are far from trivial. Because the hospitals were overcrowded, Robin, a 4-month-old baby, was forced to wait almost 2 weeks for liver surgery, when the intervention required rapid treatment, reports RTL this Friday. The illness and the hospital caring for her were not reported on the radio.

“To tell yourself ‘it’s 2022, we’re in France, we can’t operate on our son,'” laments his mother, still in shock.

Due to the bronchiolitis epidemic, the number of emergency room visits and hospitalizations has reached a level higher than the peaks of the last 10 years. Overwhelmed, the pediatric services are forced to deschedule many procedures, as they did with little Robin, before taking care of him after 13 days.

“Extremely difficult” for caregivers

“It’s hard to listen as parents,” admits the boy’s mother about her son’s operation, which was postponed for a while.

“But it is extremely difficult for the caregivers in front of you, who in the end can no longer practice their profession in the most optimal conditions possible,” he later underlines.

However, the newborn, who suffered from severe liver disease, needed to be operated on quickly.

“The longer you wait, the more you can damage your liver and develop lesions,” explains Robin’s mother.

The Ministry of Health has launched the ORSAN national emergency plan provided for in exceptional health situations in all hospitals in France and has promised to “strengthen the means” in hospitals.
