Between January 1 and February 4, 2025, in France, ten new cases of MPOX were reported, a new name for the “monkey smallpox”, to the health authorities. This is indicated by the epidemiological evaluation of Public Health France (SPF), published on Wednesday, February 5.
All identified cases, “biologically confirmed”, refer to adult men, between 25 and 44 years. Of the ten cases, eight of them residing in île-de-France.
There are no trips abroad
Six of them, those “for whom this information was available,” they said “without knowing if they had been at risk in the three weeks prior to the occurrence of symptoms,” SPF specifies.
In addition, “among the eight cases admitted, no trip to” a foreign country “has been reported during the three weeks prior to the occurrence of symptoms. Only one in the ten cases was hospitalized, due to complications,” namely a “generalized eruption”.
The new variant not in question
At the moment, the analysis of seven of the cases revealed that the patients carried the “clado II”, and therefore not of the new “clado 1b”, first detected in France at the end of December.
The patient in question had consulted a general practitioner around December 20 after the appearance of evocative buttons. The presence of this new variant had been confirmed by the Ministry of Health on January 6.
Unlike clade 1 Classic, present for decades in Africa, this variant has been identified much more recently in the Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC). After the detection of this “sporadic case” in France, the health authorities emphasized that “there was no concern.”
In total, according to Public Health France, between March 1, 2024 and February 4, 2025, “204 cases of MPOX”, confirmed biologically, declared themselves in France.
