With the fall in the consumption of prescribed antibiotics for winter diseases, amoxicillin -based medications are now available in sufficient quantity to meet the needs of patients, the medicine security authority said Monday.
With respect to the most common amoxicillin, the antibiotic in France, “the supplies are regular and cover the needs of the patients”, after having undergone a particularly serious shortage in 2022, observes the ANSM in a press release.
“The situation is gradually improving” for clarithromycin
At the end of 2024, the Health Authority had already informed an improvement in amoxicillin supplies compared to the previous winter.
“The situation is gradually improving” for another antibiotic, clarithromycin, which was very requested in its oral version to treat young children along the stuffed epidemic in the national territory, adds the ANSM.
However, difficulties persist in the supply chain for “certain doses of amoxicillin / clavulanic acid” but the situation “significantly improved” during winter 2024-2025, the agency underlines.
Covering the “insured” needs for other drugs
In this context, the ANSM has decided to alleviate “in the coming weeks” certain measures implemented in the winter -gain to reduce antibiotic supply voltages.
For example, pharmacies had to obtain drugs based on amoxicillin and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid exclusively through wholesale reparators. Now they can also provide manufacturers directly.
The health authority also plans to repeal “in the next few days”, the master preparations of amoxicillin for children, medications made by the pharmacist in case the lack of availability of the initial recipe.
For other drugs well meditated in winter (paracetamol, oral corticosteroids and asthma treatment, “the coverage of needs is to date,” the ANSM has completed.
