“Who imagines, by making a vinaigrette, which contains a hydrocarbon and that we risk our health?” Ask Richard Ramos. Loiret Modem MP has presented a bill to prohibit Hexane, said that Parisian In an interview published on Monday, April 7.
This oil derivative is also used well to produce many oils, cocoa butter, children’s milk but also sticks, paintings or print inks. The elected official deplores the “lack of transparency” of the manufacturers with respect to their use of this substance.
And for a good reason, the hexane is not used as an ingredient, but only as a “technological assistant”, which allows producing the different foods cited. In particular, it allows to extract oil from different plants. Hexano or C6H14, therefore, does not appear on the list of ingredients located on oil labels.
A “poison” for consumers?
An “incomprehensible” absence for Richard Ramos, who denounces with 20 minutes “a poison” for consumers. According to the National Institute for Research and Security (INrs), the hexane can “cause signs of central nervous system” and irritation “to the eye and respiratory mucous membranes.”
“In the case of repeated exposure, the most serious poisoning (…) is mainly reflected in damage to the nervous system, in particular the sensitive-motor peripheral polynems. Organic mental disorders are also described,” explains the institute.
However, INR data is incomplete since the effects of this DNA component are not documented when data on cancer effects and reproduction “do not allow to conclude.”
Insufficient hexane security data
Hexane use thresholds authorized by the European Union should make possible any health risk for consumers, but the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published on September 13 a report “concluding that the evaluation of the security of the use of hexane is the need to update the safety of the hexane as a solvent of extraction for food production” that leave 1996, indicates the Ministry of Agriculture.
“The information provided by the study on rats taken into account by the Scientific Food Committee is no longer considered enough to conclude the security of the technical hexane,” writes EFSA.
In addition to his bill, Richard Ramos announced the launch of an information mission on this issue. “At least, we are asking what the products will be written, this product contains hexane.” But if the mission’s conclusions show that it is dangerous to health: we must prohibit it in France, “he estimated with 20 minutes. At this stage, hexane is only prohibited for the production of organic products.
