Chikungunya at the meeting: five new deaths attributed to the disease, the epidemic “in the decrease phase”

The five deaths occurred between March 31 and May 11. According to the prefecture of the meeting, the number of consultations for clinically evocative cases of Chikungunya and emergency tickets are currently in a “acute decrease” on the island.

The number of deaths related to the Chikungunya epidemic at the meeting is now 20. The death of five people has been attributed to infectious diseases that, however, is “in the decomposition phase”, announced this Wednesday, June 4, June 4 (SPF).

“After the last meeting of the Imputability Committee (…), five files” were classified as deaths related to Chikungunya, SPF said in his epidemiological bulletin, while specifying that “the meeting has been in the epidemic decomposition” since the end of April.

37 Other deaths under investigation

In a press release, the meeting prefecture, meanwhile, announced a return to the “stage of low intensity epidemic”, evoking the “acute decrease” of the number of consultations for clinically evocative cases of Chikungunya and emergency rooms.

“The impact on health establishments has also decreased,” said the prefecture.

The five deaths that occurred between March 31 and May 11 were the subject of an investigation within the framework of the epidemic that began in August 2024 at a meeting, where cases exploded since March 2025.

All refer to people aged 68 to 95 with comorbidities (mainly chronic pathologies), according to the agency, which specifies that another 37 deaths are invested in Chikungunya’s responsibility.

A drop in consultations among doctors

The Indian Ocean Department is in the “epidemic decrease” phase during the fifth consecutive week, however, the health agency says, and adds that “although in acute decrease, the circulation of Chikungunya on the island remains important with disparities according to the geographical sectors.”

The city’s medicine activity with respect to the epidemic fell 55% for a week, of around 3,800 consultations to 1,800. Emergency passes due to Chikungunya have decreased 15% for a week.

Since the beginning of 2025, almost 53,000 “biologically confirmed by aboriginal Chikungunya” have been reported at the meeting, which has around 900,000 inhabitants.

However, the total number of cases is considered much higher, several patients who are not being evaluated. The Regional Health Agency (ARS) of the estimates of the meeting, as well as 200,000 people, would have been contaminated by the virus.

The southern winter that promises to be a lasting decrease in the spread of the disease, Ars said at the beginning of the week, it is also unlikely to be an epidemic rebound next year due to the now immunized number of people.

However, Mayotte, another French department of the Indian Ocean, has passed in the epidemic phase this week, with an “intense and generalized transmission” of this viral disease transmitted by the Tiger mosquito. Since the beginning of the year, there have been informed 560 confirmed cases of Chikungunya.
