Given the explosion of Covid-19 cases in China, a growing number of countries have decided to impose restrictions on travelers from this country, in particular the presentation of a negative test.
The European Commission convened a meeting on this issue on Thursday morning, bringing together representatives of the 27 Ministries of Health. At the end of this meeting, “the Member States stressed the need to establish a common and coherent strategy at the Union level”, BFMTV has learned from government sources.
“We are looking for measures at a European level as part of a coordinated approach,” the Élysée told BFMTV.
Coordinated measures at European level
At the moment in France, the Ministry of Health says that it is following the evolution of the situation very closely and says that it is “ready to study all useful measures”. For her part, the immunologist Brigitte Autran, president of the Health Risk Monitoring and Forecasting Committee (Covars) believes that border controls in France are not necessary “for the moment.”
“For the sake of efficiency, France wanted to act in a coordinated manner with the other EU Member States, as it has always done since the start of the health crisis,” specifies the Élysée.
Although the situation in China is worrying, the government is studying the appropriate measures to protect the French that could be taken in this epidemic context at the national and European level.
The importance of vaccination
“The meeting of the EU health security committee allowed us to take stock of the international situation,” the executive specifies with BFMTV.
However, the government wants to be reassuring: “the number of Chinese travelers to Europe remains limited and will remain so for several weeks, while the Chinese opening measures come into force and are implemented.”
The authorities also insist on the importance of vaccination, which “remains at the center of the fight against the epidemic with respect to daily barrier gestures.”
According to our information, the Ministry of Transport asked French airlines and airports on Wednesday to set up a test verification system to be ready without delay when decisions are made at the European level.
