Mushroom sometimes rhymes with poisoning. With the arrival of autumn, walks through the forest return, sometimes accompanied by the picking of seasonal mushrooms. The National Food Safety Agency (ANSES) warns of the risk of poisoning.
“If (mushrooms) are popular dishes, some species are nonetheless toxic or even deadly to humans. (…) Stay tuned!”, recalls the health agency in a press release published last week.
ANSES sounds the alarm when verifying resumption of cases of poisoning. “More than sixty cases have already been identified since September 1,” he laments.
Four deaths in 2021
For the Health Agency, these poisonings are produced mainly by “confusion of an edible species with a toxic species” by collectors or by the consumption of mushrooms “in poor condition or poorly cooked”.
It also warns against using smartphone apps that promise to identify a species of fungus, but which it deems unreliable.
In 2021, 1,269 mushroom poisonings were reported to poison centers, linked in more than 9 out of 10 cases to the consumption of harvested mushrooms. Four people died.
In case of doubt about the species of a fungus, ANSES recommends not consuming it.
