Worrying figures. The Cancer Barometer 2021, published this Monday by Public Health France and the National Cancer Institute, points out that the declared screening rates in France “continue to be below the targets set at the European level” for several types of cancer, including that of mother.
If the majority (68.8%) of women aged 50 to 74 say they are up to date with breast cancer screening by mammography, it is “18.7 points less than in 2010”. As for men, only 33.4% of those over 50 said they had already had a prostate cancer screening. In 2010, this proportion was higher by 18.2 points.
Furthermore, “only 43% of people ages 50 to 74 said they were up to date with their colorectal cancer screening,” the report states.
“A continued and significant decline”
“The perceptions related to the state of health and the risk of cancer, age or even tobacco use; the marital and family situation also influences the performance of the screenings”, explains Public Health France and the National Cancer Institute in this barometer, carried out every five years. years.
The trend is “worrying, marked by a continuous and significant decrease in the declaration of participation in organized screening programs,” warns SPF.
Above all because, the organizations point out, “although it varies from one screening to another, the effectiveness of the screening in terms of cancer prevention is established.”
The ten-year strategy for the fight against cancer sets the ambitious goal of carrying out one million additional screenings by 2025 and proposes measures to simplify access to them.
