“It is impossible”: Macron’s promise to “unclog” emergencies by the end of 2024 does not convince caregivers

The objective set by the President of the Republic on Monday night is “unsustainable”, according to many emergency doctors. They point out several current problems such as the lack of generalists.

“Decongest” emergency services at the end of next year. This is the promise made by Emmanuel Macron, who spoke to the French on Monday night, during a televised address.

Il s’agit selon le président de “profondément rebâtir le sistème de santé” et plus largement du “progrès pour mieux vivre”, l’un des trois chantiers qu’il a fixé avec ceux du travail, ainsi que de l’ordre et Justice.

“Impossible”

But the course set by the Head of State does not convince the main stakeholders. It is certainly ambitious, but above all unsustainable according to many emergency physicians.

“20 months to go back on 20 to 30 years of inconsistency for public service and emergencies, it is impossible”, cut Patrick Pelloux, president of the emergency doctors of France.

The practitioner thus underlines two problems: that of the “downstream beds for emergencies” and that of the “public hospital”. If we don’t act on these issues, “we won’t make it,” he warns. Because to solve the problem of overcrowding in the emergency room, doctors believe that it is necessary to go step by step. One of the main projects: to have more generalists.

“We are in a context of rampant desertification in terms of city medicine,” says Jean-Paul Hamon, president of the French Federation of Physicians.

And regret the “conventional negotiations” that resulted in “no appeal to the city’s medicine”, but plagued by “desertification”. In summary, the equation is simple: according to the doctors interviewed, the government will have to go against what has been done up to now to succeed in its commitment.
