PR admits to vetoing diplomas on teachers’ careers if it is not balanced

The president of the republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, admitted in London on Wednesday that he vetoed the diploma which aims to correct the asymmetries resulting from the freezing of teachers’ careers if it does not provide a balanced solution .

“For me it is very important because if it is a balanced solution, I have no problem implementing it. If it is a solution that is not balanced, I have to return the diploma to the government,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa against journalists arriving at your hotel in London.

The head of state added that he “would prefer this not to happen”.

The president referred to the government’s diploma aimed at correcting asymmetries resulting from the freezing of teachers’ careers.

The text provides for a series of measures to accelerate the advancement of teachers who worked during the two periods of frost, between 2005 and 2017.

Marcelo said he was waiting for the diploma to arrive in Belém on this issue and that he intended to listen to the teachers’ unions before making a decision.

“On the one hand, it is known that it probably cannot be a global total solution, and that there are constraints of various kinds – financial and administrative – that do not allow this immediate total solution,” he said.

On the other hand, the president said he believed the vast majority of teachers “are very sensible and realize that the best is the enemy of the good.”

“It is expected that the government will do the right thing, that is, take steps to actually find a solution that will allow the next school year to start in a more serene and peaceful atmosphere,” he stressed.

The President of the Republic today embarked on a two-day visit to London to celebrate the 650th anniversary of the Portuguese-British alliance.

Due to a delay, the visit to the Portuguese pavilion at the Taste of London gastronomic festival could not take place.

In the evening, he is the special guest at a dinner organized by the Portuguese Diaspora Council and the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the United Kingdom, reserved for invited guests.

He will be received by King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on Thursday morning and then the two heads of state will attend a religious ceremony in the Queen’s Chapel at Saint James Palace.

The event marks the anniversary of the 1373 Treaty of London, signed by Edward III of England and Fernando I of Portugal, which began the world’s longest-lasting diplomatic alliance.
