The Prime Minister, António Costa, underlined this Friday the decisive role of the European Parliament (EP) in decisions “important for the daily life” of the Portuguese, recalling that the 2024 European elections will be an opportunity to choose the future of Europe.
In São Bento this Thursday, António Costa received EP President Roberta Metsola, with whom he discussed “the main issues on the agenda of the European Union (EU)”.
“It is very important to feel the closeness of the European institutions to the citizens and this visit by Metsola to Portugal is a sign of that,” the head of the Portuguese government stressed in a message via the social network Twitter.
The minister also stressed that the EP “is at the center of European democracy” and “plays a decisive role in important decisions for the daily life of all Portuguese people”.
“In June 2024, in the European elections, we will all have the opportunity to express our opinion about the Europe we want,” he added.

Also on Twitter, in a message in Portuguese, Roberta Metsola thanked António Costa for “such a warm welcome to incredible Lisbon”.
Metsola added that he discussed with the Portuguese Prime Minister “next steps on migration and solutions to socio-economic challenges for the European Council next week”, also thanking “Portugal’s role” in European support for Ukraine .

Roberta Metsola will speak at the Assembly of the Republic this Friday, on the second and last day of her official visit to Portugal, and then take part in the debate in the plenary.
At the invitation of Augusto Santos Silva, the president of the parliament of the republic, the head of the EP in Portugal will be the first president of a European institution to take part in a parliamentary debate in Portugal.
The Council of State meets in the Palácio de Belém to analyze the “perspectives on the current situation in Europe”, with the participation of the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, as a guest.
This meeting of the political consultative body of the President of the Republic will take place about a year before the next European elections, which are scheduled for June 6-9, 2024.
It is the 29th meeting of the Council of State convened by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa since he took office as President of the Republic in March 2016, and the third in a row devoted to European issues.
