The Prime Minister announced today that the government will present in Porto on Wednesday the layout and development of the high-speed line Lisbon, Porto and Vigo, which is the first step towards integration into the Iberian network.
António Costa spoke at the opening session of the VI Portuguese Tourism Summit, at the Champalimaud Foundation, after an intervention by the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, in defense of the strategic commitment to the railways.
“Tomorrow [na quarta-feira] the government will present in the city of Porto the design and development of the high-speed line between Lisbon, Porto and Vigo. It will be the first structuring axis of our insertion into the Iberian high-speed network,” the Prime Minister said.
Likewise, according to the leader of the executive, “the government will be able to approve the National Railway Plan, which is already a consequence of the National Plan of Infrastructure”.
“The rail link is essential for national cohesion and sustainable tourism, as the mayor of Lisbon said here,” emphasized Carlos Moedas, the former mayor of the capital between 2007 and 2019.
In the Prime Minister’s perspective, “for sustainable tourism in Portugal, the country needs a good infrastructure, especially in terms of transport”.
“It was very important for the Assembly of the Republic to have approved the National Infrastructure Plan by a very large majority, which will allow us to overcome one of the major historical obstacles in the country, namely the high-speed link between Lisbon and Porto.”, he added.
