“I think it was time that the Prime Minister could respond to the criticism that has been made and I think that is very justified,” said the blockist coordinator.
At a press conference at the end of a meeting of the National Council of BE, in Lisbon, the deputy was questioned about the Prime Minister’s silence, after news reported that he had a stopover in Budapest, when he traveled on a plane Force planes and watched the Europa League final with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea to use public resources, namely the Falcon, a transport and travel tool that the Prime Minister has for official visits, to make a short stop to watch a football match, on top of that to do it together with an authoritarian far-right leader, as is the case with Viktor Orbán,” criticized Mariana Mortágua.
The BE coordinator qualified the Prime Minister’s decision as “deplorable, due to the political consequence regarding the presence in the same room as this authoritarian leader” and also “for the use of public funds that was ultimately made without consideration”.
Speaking of a “personally decided stop” by António Costa, Mortágua took the view that “there was no obligation to go to a football match” in Hungary.
“And it would be better for everyone if the Prime Minister clarified this issue so that we can close it once and for all,” he defended, even pointing out that Costa owes “the country” this clarification on “an episode , an incident caused by the government’s lack of common sense”.
Mariana Mortágua also defended that “the country has much more important things to worry about at the moment, since the recent announcement of the increase in interest rates on housing loans by the European Central Bank, such as the very serious problems with access to housing because of rents”.
“I think this must be the center of the political problems,” he said, considering “it is regrettable that the government wastes so much time managing its own affairs, which it creates, and that it has so little time to spare to deal with the country’s problems”.
António Costa made a stopover in Budapest on May 31 on his way to Moldova for the European Political Community Summit, with the event not scheduled, the Observer reported.
According to the same newspaper, the head of the Portuguese government traveled in a Falcon 50 of the Portuguese Air Force and watched the Europa League football final match between Sevilla and Roma, the Italian team led by José Mourinho, with the Prime Minister. Hungarian minister Viktor Orbán.
The Lusa bureau questioned the Prime Minister’s office, which has been criticized by the opposition, but has so far received no response.
