The PCP secretary-general this Monday accused the government of being “solely responsible” for how this school year will end and defended that the economy’s growth will not “fall back into nothing in the pockets of the workers”.
Speaking at the opening session of the PCP’s parliamentary days, which take place from Monday to Tuesday in Serra da Estrela, Paulo Raimundo considered it necessary to invest in education and public schools and to respect and appreciate its professionals.
“Recognition of the time of the teachers’ frozen careers is required – six years, six months and 23 days – as the teachers have indicated and still indicate with their expressive struggle,” he stressed.
The PCP leader claimed that “the end of the precarious situation affecting 53% of teachers in higher education” must be demanded” and referred that “out of 20,000 precarious teachers with more than three years of service, the government is only connect to bind half”, and the rest will “live on the thread”.
“The government, in its sole discretion, is responsible for the impact on the lives of these employees and is solely responsible for how this school year ends and the next begins. (…) The future of public schools is also determined here,” he defended . .
In this approximately 15-minute speech, the Secretary General of the PCP also stressed that “three million workers, 70% of the total, earn less than a thousand euros gross per month”, while at the same time the “main economic groups in Portugal had in the year 2022 20 million euros profit per day”.
“The economy is growing, we’re told that every day. It’s growing everywhere, it’s always going up, but this growth in this economy isn’t going back to anything in the pockets of workers, retirees. But there are those who are button, and very well, to this growth,” he said.
