Montenegro asks government to rectify local housing proposals

In Setúbal this Tuesday, the PSD president reaffirmed a commitment to withdraw local accommodation measures announced by the government if elected prime minister, defending that the executive can still correct the proposals for the sector.

“The appeal I want to make here is that the Socialist Party can correct some of the errors in these proposals, as I have no hope that it will do so completely,” Luís Montenegro said, after defending a series of measures that resulted from the dialogue with the Association of Local Accommodation in Portugal (ALEP).

“I sincerely hope that this activity can survive this attack by the government and the Socialist Party, so that we can meet again in the near future and give local housing the dignity and operational conditions that are important to create jobs, offer , to have a regulated activity and not what we had before there was local accommodation as we know it today,” he added.

Luís Montenegro, speaking to journalists as part of the Sentir Portugal initiative, which runs until Thursday in the Setúbal district, defended that local housing does not harm the housing sector.

“Ten, fifteen years ago, the local housing buildings, most of them, were abandoned, dilapidated, without habitation of any kind,” said the PSD leader, who assured that there were also many local housing operations, but they were declared and that, therefore, fell “beyond the sieve of health rules, tax rules, rules of conditions given to customers of local accommodation”.

“I am staying in local accommodation, as I always do when I come to spend these weeks of the Sentir Portugal initiative in the districts, and I can confirm that, for example, the building I am using this week would not have been “It is a mistake to to think that that renovation would have been for housing purposes, because it was not profitable,” emphasized Luís Montenegro.

The PSD leader, who also defended the inclusion of that river route in the Navegante Pass during the ferry trip between Setúbal and Troia, had the president of the Associação do Alojamento Local in Portugal wait for him across the river (ALEP). ), Edward Miranda.

“The mistake [do Governo] It starts by associating local accommodation in the Mais Habitação package, by including the discussion of such an important sector, with so many profound issues that require different treatment, in the Mais Habitação package. Local accommodation is neither the problem nor the solution for housing,’ says Eduardo Miranda.

“It was an option of the government. The government went ahead, presented its proposal to parliament, but also let it be known that now would be the time, in parliament, for debate, for discussion. Our association does not present laws and therefore, we have been talking to the parties and have looked at the sensitivity of those parties that would be interested in deepening the theme,” he added.

According to Eduardo Miranda, the PSD showed interest and openness to try to find solutions and present an alternative proposal, “showing that this balance between housing, between condominiums, between neighbours, between local accommodation is possible”.

“From then on, we still have a negotiating period here before the final vote. We hope that this will serve to open the door to what the governing party has always said, that despite an absolute majority, it would be available to balance the balance. And this is what we would like to see from now on, because there are options, there are multiple options,” said ALEP’s chairman.

As part of the PSD Sentir Portugal initiative, which is touring across the country, the PSD leader visited the Navigator factory in Setúbal today to learn more about the issues facing the industry and the entire paper production chain.

“We had the opportunity to interact with the pulp and paper industry and therefore with the entire forestry sector, an area that has unfortunately also been neglected in recent years and that we believe is strategic not only to promote greater territorial cohesion in our guarantee land, and implement a forestry policy to make the most of our natural resources and greatly reduce the dangers of forest fires,” said Luís Montenegro.

“We have a very interesting ‘cluster’ of activities in Portugal, which is a leader in Europe, namely in printing paper, and which of course needs to be controlled. Unfortunately, we have a government that has lost the value of our agriculture, the production capacity of our agriculture and also our forest,” concludes the PSD leader.
