PSD leader reaffirms the need to welcome immigrants to prevent human trafficking

The president of the PSD reaffirmed on Wednesday that Portugal must have a “well-structured program for attracting, receiving and integrating immigrants” to prevent these people from becoming targets of human trafficking networks.

Luís Montenegro responded to the operation carried out at the national level by the Maritime Police this Wednesday to combat criminal networks linked to the illegal catching, trafficking and international trade of shellfish, identifying 243 immigrants and arresting four people.

“We have been supporting for a year now the need for Portugal to have a well-structured program for attracting, welcoming and integrating immigrants. We need migrant workers in different sectors of economic activity, but we need to set conditions”he said.

The PSD leader argued that people cannot be targeted by networks that do not look at the means of making illegal profits, and also defended the need to regulate immigration to give people dignity.

“The forces of the left immediately revolt and want to accuse us of racist and xenophobic political behavior. They are so ridiculous that they don’t even deserve a response. What deserves a response is the situation in which many of the immigrants who come here have no decent shelter, housing and social support,” he stressed.

Luis Montenegro spoke to journalists in Bairro Cidade Sol, in Barreiro, during the “Sentir Portugal” initiative, which runs until Thursday in the Setúbal district.

As part of this initiative, Luis Montenegro has scheduled a meeting for Thursday with shellfish collectors from the Tagus River, in Praia Fluvial do Samouco, in the municipality of Alcochete, one of the areas targeted today by an operation to combat criminal networks. related to the illegal trapping, trafficking and international trade of bivalves, developed by the Central Criminal Investigation Unit (UCIC) of the Maritime Police.
