Chega defends the dismissal of the Supervisory Board of the ‘secretas’

The president of Chega defended this Wednesday the dismissal of the members of the Supervisory Board of the Information Service of the Portuguese Republic (CFSIRP), as they lost “the conditions of impartiality and independence to exercise the function”.

“This supervisory board is not suited to the position it holds, it is too dependent on political power” and “does not guarantee impartiality, which is one of the main requirements to remain in office,” said André Ventura in statements to journalists at the General Assembly of the Republic.

Noting that CFSIRP members are elected by the Assembly of the Republic and can only be dismissed “under certain circumstances”, Chega’s leader believed that these conditions have been met and stated that the party will “start the process of dismissal” , asking “a specific advice of dismissal to the 1st Committee”.

This process was initiated by the Liberal Initiative, which proposed more than a month ago to hear the SIRP oversight board. That hearing took place last Wednesday and Deputy Patrícia Gilvaz, from IL, told journalists that an opinion is already scheduled for the Constitutional Affairs Committee on the dismissal process of the SIRP oversight board.

André Ventura claimed that the process initiated by the IL “is not a formal dismissal, but a hearing process for that purpose” and defended that, according to his interpretation of the law, “the dismissal process must be formally initiated and with that goal”.

The president of Chega considered that “the legal basis that allowed the SIS to operate has not yet been identified in a clear, safe and certain way” in the recovery of the computer in the possession of the former assistant to the Minister of Infrastructure , Frederico Pinheiro, on April 26.

“Without phantasmagorical interpretations, it is now clear that the government is unable to establish the legal basis for action, but neither is the Supervisory Board,” he defended, accusing the CFSIRP of being “more concerned about the protection of the government and members of the government with the legitimacy, usefulness and legality of the performance of the SIS”.

The three CFSIRP members were heard in parliament, behind closed doors, about SIS’s role in recovering a portable computer stolen from the Ministry of Infrastructure by Frederico Pinheiro, who had been fired from his job hours before, on April 26. his position as an adviser to Minister João Galamba.

In a statement released after this hearing, the SIRP oversight board claimed that SIS did not use any prohibited means to restore the computer and that there is no “evidence of illegal action”.
