Marcelo does not comment on rent support controversy for the time being: ‘Wait and see’

“I have to say that I still do not know the PS bill, I will wait and see what exactly it intends: whether it is to supplement the previous law, whether it is about amending the previous law, whether it is is about correcting some of the waiting,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa told journalists as he left a conference at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon.

When asked how he interprets the wording of the Decree-Law of March 22, which stipulates for the purpose of this extraordinary support that “the total income for determining the rate determined by the AT [Autoridade Tributária] in the liquidation of the IRS,” the head of state declined to comment.

“I’m not going to comment on that because that’s a sensitive issue that needs to be dealt with in the future. We’ll wait and see,” he replied. “Let’s wait and see what the initiative of the PS is,” he repeated.

The President of the Republic refused to qualify the internal dispatch of the Ministry of Finance signed on June 1 by the Secretary of State for Fiscal Affairs.

As argued by Diário Notícias/Dinheiro Vivo, this order specifies that instead of the “total income for determining the rate,” which appears in line 9 of the IRS settlement notes, the income support should be calculated taking into account the ” gross income”, the value of which appears on the first line and includes specific deductions.

Taking into account a higher annual income for the calculation of the effort percentage for house rentals, a lower amount of extraordinary support results.

The opposition in general contested this choice of the government and the president of the PSD, Luís Montenegro, appealed to the president of the republic to veto the future law to be approved by the PS in parliament .

Although the intention of the PS to enshrine in law that income support is calculated on the basis of “gross income”, meeting the option of the Ministry of Finance, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reserved his position for later: “I do not want to comment give up on the matter without seeing the law”.

Faced with the media’s insistence on qualifying the performance of Finance, the head of state insisted: “I do not want to comment on this matter, as you have already understood”.
