Opposition ‘missed all predictions’ and government ‘faced the crisis’

The chairman of the PS parliamentary group, Eurico Brilhante Dias, said on Sunday that the opposition has not made all predictions about the government’s ability to cope with the economic crisis, because the executive has managed to “do the right thing”. policies and proper accounts”.

“If the government has the right policies, with the right bills, our opposition has got all the predictions wrong, it has not hit one, it has tried to create political instability,” the leader of the PS majority bank said in the Assembly of the Republic at a dinner meeting in Funchal, which marked the opening of the party’s parliamentary days in Madeira.

Eurico Brilhante Dias stressed that at the end of the first legislature, in a year when the lives of Portuguese and Europeans were marked by the war in Ukraine, and after the opposition predicted the country’s stagnation, the government succeeded in counter scenario.

“The government has been able to start with courage, budget-wise, with measures to support people, to provide essential benefits to counter price increases by the end of 2022”alongside the recovery and resilience plan (PRR) and “mobilizing Portuguese society to face the crisis”, he stressed.

However, he recalled that the opposition, unhappy with the conditions the government had to face, “created and attempted to create an artificial political crisis, endangering the essential political stability to solve the problems and to give the Portuguese the solutions” necessary to fight against the situation.

But after a year, Portugal managed to be “one of the fastest growing member states in the European Union, more than double the initial forecast”, with unemployment falling and exports increasing, he stressed.

“If there is one element to compare, it is a government with correct policies, with correct bills and a parliamentary majority that guarantees political stability in the country with those who only create problems,” he argued.

For Eurico Brilhante Dias, most PS is “the solution and PPD/PSD the problem”.

However, the party “does not live only for the consequences of circumstances” and the government was still “able to implement important reforms”, as evidenced by the Mais Habitação program, the reform of the law of order and the Agenda for decent work.

The socialist parliamentary leader also spoke about the party’s proximity policy, acknowledged that PS/Madeira is “fighting a hard and difficult struggle” and expressed the support of the party’s national structure for the Madeiran socialists to introduce themselves at the next regional elections early in the morning. autumn. , a motivational project in a constituency of three deputies in São Bento.

“We want to strengthen [o trabalho conjunto dos grupos parlamentares] so that the Madeirans can also look to the PS as the party of the right policies and bills, a party capable of giving the Madeirans a better life,” he said.

The PS parliamentary days taking place in Madeira are subordinate to the theme of “A fair and inclusive growth” and aim to debate the state of the nation, scheduled for July 19, and the regional elections in Madeira, in September or October , to prepare.
