PS in Madeira. Half the deputies miss flight

Half of the PS deputies who were about to go to Madeira were unable to make the trip and missed the opening speech of the party’s parliamentary days that António Costa had scheduled tonight at the Pestana Casino Park in Funchal.

According to Diário de Notícias da Madeira, “about 60 delegates were unable to ‘land’ or make the connection between the capital and the region” because of the winds that yesterday caused “severe restrictions” on circulation at Funchal airport. On social media, an adviser to the bank who traveled to Madeira from Lisbon said that only on the third attempt did the plane he was on manage to land at Cristiano Ronaldo Airport.

Bad weather also forced the cancellation of a meeting due to take place this Monday in Funchal between the regional governments of Madeira and the Azores to settle proposals for the revision of the regional financial law. A note issued by the regional government of Madeira said the meeting, attended by Eduardo Vaz Ferreira, a lawyer and professor, was “postponed to a date to be determined”.

The executive explained that the postponement was due to “the cancellation of flights scheduled by other meeting participants, due to the winds ravaging the region”. The bad weather led to the cancellation of more than 200 flights between landings and take-offs. Some flights diverged to closer destinations.

Miguel Albuquerque (PSD), president of the Madeiran government, has already said he wants a new regional financial law that “restores its original objectives: predictability, regularity and stability in solidarity transfers and in line with the autonomous regions’ own revenues” .
