Marcelo: “Whatever happens in 2026, for better or for worse, is in the hands of the absolute majority”

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said on Monday that “until 2026, for better or for worse, what happens until 2026 is in the hands of the absolute majority”.

In Palermo, where he participates with his Italian counterpart and the King of Spain in the sixteenth meeting of the COTEC Europe business organization, the President of the Republic recalled what he said on the day of the inauguration of the government.

Remember, at the time the head of state stressed that the Portuguese chose “to give the absolute majority to a party” but “also to a man” and threatened early elections if António Costa left the government to adopt a European position to take. “The Portuguese know the position of the president,” he stressed, in Sicily.

“The absolute majority holds and exclusive the key to what happens, good and bad for its stability. It does not depend on any other party or set of parties,” he warned.

The Prime Minister, António Costa, said he will not be available to hold a position in the European Union after the June 2024 elections, the newspaper Público writes this Monday.

Commenting on the newspaper, in response to the news that Brussels will pressure the Portuguese Prime Minister to go to the European Council, António Costa explained that he will not accept any mission that endangers the stability of the country.

“I guarantee stability. I have already explained to everyone that I will not accept any mission that would jeopardize the stability in Portugal. Would I ever jeopardize the stability that I have won so hard?” he wondered.

Público also writes that the Prime Minister’s unavailability to occupy European positions is linked to “his concern not to provoke political crises in Portugal”.

The paper also adds other factors, including the idea that António Costa is “100% focused on fulfilling the Prime Minister’s mandate until the end of the legislature, which ends after the September or October 2026 legislature, and on the achievement of the objectives it proposes, namely Portuguese budgetary stabilization”.
