Santos Silva asks PS with a reformist spirit and no fear of companies

The President of the Assembly of the Republic considered it essential this Monday that the PS and the government have a reformist spirit, always try to defend the public interest and act fearlessly despite the opposition of companies or private groups.

These messages were conveyed by Augusto Santos Silva in the speech he delivered at dinner on the second day of the PS parliamentary days, which end on Tuesday, in Funchal.

Without referring to specific political cases, the former foreign minister began by advocating before the socialist deputies the following line of demarcation: “Where some want to reduce politics to the scum of the day and anecdotal cases, the PS should focus on priorities”.

“The PS must have these priorities clear and have a reformist spirit,” he stressed.

Augusto Santos Silva later stated that the PS must “defend the public interest” and “not be afraid of the particular resistance that transformations always arouse”.

“The public interest should not be confused with the interest of any specific group or company, regardless of the apparent strength of that group or company,” he warned, but without mentioning any specific social sector.

For the President of the Republic’s Assembly, the government and the PS must follow “a logic of continuity” in terms of their political action. Rightly so:

“The transformations that the country has already experienced are the result of policy continuity. And the priorities the country has to face require this policy continuity. The PS must focus on what is an essential advantage of the country and of political democracy.” he defended.

In the last part of his speech, Augusto Santos Silva, like before the leader of the socialist group, Eurico Brilhante Dias, defended the statement that the PS is “the fundamental guarantor of political stability” in Portugal.
