Costa wants 70% of the adult population to have completed secondary education by 2030

The Prime Minister, António Costa, defended this Tuesday the continuity of investment in the qualification of the Portuguese, assuming that by 2030 70% of the adult population must have completed at least secondary education.

This objective was conveyed by António Costa in the closing address of the morning session of the North Strategy 2030 Seminar, in Europarque, which takes place in Santa Maria da Feira, in the Aveiro district.

The head of government pointed out that the investment in the qualification of the Portuguese was the “biggest structural change” the country has experienced in the last 20 years, stating that this effort “must be continued and cannot be focused only on the new generations” . , where the country is already “above the European average in terms of participation in higher education”.

“We Can’t Leave Anyone Behind”said Costa, who stressed that the investment to be made in adult education and training “is paramount”.

The Prime Minister also pointed out that investing in adult education implies a “gigantic” effort from the point of view of people and companies, because “a large part of this population is the active population”.

Costa also recalled that in 2004, when the European Union was last enlarged, only 25% of the Portuguese population had completed secondary education, while in the new accession countries 75% of the population already had at least secondary education.

In his speech, Costa also said there is a contractual target for about 200,000 workers to be involved in “upskilling” and “reskilling”, bearing in mind that there is a range of activities that exist today that will necessarily be discontinued. in this digital and energy transition process.
