The General Secretary of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), Paulo Raimundo, defended this Saturday that Portugal should put pressure on those involved in the war in Ukraine to sit down and find a solution, rather than by to fuel the conflict.
“What we need is that the Portuguese state, even if it respects the constitution, commits itself, with all the means at its disposal, to force the actors in the war to find a solution,” he said.
At the end of a meeting that took place this afternoon in São Romão, in the municipality of Seia, the leader of the PCP stressed to journalists that Portugal should “invest everything” in seeking peace, rather than starting war.
“It should put pressure to bring the actors in the war, Russia, NATO, the European Union, to the table to find a solution to the conflict,” he added.
The Portuguese government on this day expressed its support for Ukraine joining NATO “when circumstances permit” and defended that more sanctions should be imposed on Russiain a joint statement released after a phone call between Prime Minister António Costa and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
“In these minutes of the phone call and while we were reaching this agreement, hundreds of people in Ukraine died as a result of the ongoing war,” criticized the Communist General Secretary.
According to Paulo Raimundo, the Portuguese government is not doing everything in its power to seek peace, despite all the consequences the conflict has for the Ukrainian and Russian people, but also for the Portuguese.
“There is no initiative, from any country in the European Union, except the state of the Vatican, in the sense of seeking peace. It is only in seeking solutions for more war, some more destruction, more kill means.” , more sanctions and the consequences are clear,” he concluded.
