Former Secretary of State Marco Capitão Ferreira announced on Tuesday that he will not attend Wednesday’s hearing of the parliamentary defense committee, after appealing to his current status as a defendant under the “Perfect Storm” trial.
A parliamentary source told DN that the position of Marco Capitão Ferreira, who was relieved of his duties as Secretary of State for Defense last Friday, was forwarded to parliamentary committee members by email this evening.
Last week, parliament approved a request from Chega to hear Marco Capitão Ferreira to clarify an advisory contract he signed with the Directorate General of National Defense Resources (DGRDN) before assuming the position of Secretary of State.
This request was later approved, with the PS abstaining. The same vote also approved a PSD request requesting documentation on this contract.
On Friday, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, accepted the resignation of Marco Capitão Ferreira, proposed by the Prime Minister, António Costa.
The former Secretary of State for Defense was named a defendant in the “Perfect Storm” trial, which led to judicial police searching his home and the Ministry of Defense.
Marco Capitão Ferreira assumed the position of Secretary of State for Defense when the current government took office on March 30, 2022.
