Luís Montenegro said he had already spoken to Rui Rio this Saturday after the searches that took place this week at the PSD and in the house of the former PSD leader and defended that in this case there was “a disproportion between the actions and the purpose of the research”.
The Social Democratic leader emphasized that the PSD is “a party that values transparency and compliance with the law” and expressed his full willingness to provide all clarifications to the authorities about the party’s functioning.
Since what happened in the context of an investigation was normal, Montenegro nevertheless defended that “there was a disproportion between the actions, the elements collected and the object of the investigation”.
“We don’t want to get involved in the investigation,” he assured. But for the PSD leader, there were situations that were “difficult to explain”, namely the cloning of electronic equipment or the fact that Rui Rio’s personal mobile phone was seized in the searches.
“You need justice that people believe in. No one is above the law,” he said. And he added: “There are no sacred cows on the side of politics or on the side of justice.”
For Montenegro, “one should not do more than is necessary to achieve a given goal”.
The Social Democratic leader also said that the law is being followed in the party, as he believes before.
