For example, PR says “must speak out” about searches of PSD headquarters and Rui Rio’s house

The president of the Economic and Social Council defended this Saturday that the president of the republic should speak out about the searches at the headquarters of the PSD and in the house of former leader Rui Rio, given the seriousness of the situation.

“The President of the Republic will understand the most appropriate way to speak on the subject. But I understand that the President of the Republic must speak and I am convinced that he will, I have no doubt “, said Francisco Assisting the journalists on the sidelines of the IV Convention of the States General of the PS/Madeira that takes place in the city of Santa Cruz under the theme “Economy of the Future”.

The official believed that “what happened this week is so serious” that it justifies not remaining silent.

“And I understand that everyone is obliged to do this and should not resort to ambiguous statements. They must take very clear positions. All those who have political responsibilities in Portugal,” he stated.

For Francisco Assis, “this was not just an attack on Dr. Rui Rio, this was an attack on Portuguese democratic institutions,” he argued.

According to him, “It is no longer a problem of justice. It is a problem of justice policy. Politics in the even more demanding sense of the word, in the sense of the political organization of the Portuguese state,” he insisted.

Francisco Assis believed that there is “a political responsibility here that must be fully assumed”, admitting his concern “because it is one of the biggest threats we have, not only in Portugal”.

“It doesn’t put the prosecution in order. In the justice system, in my opinion, there are parts of the justice system that are behaving in a completely unacceptable way, endangering the basic principles of a rule of law. Social communication,” meant.

The president of the CES added that, in his view, this connection between some sectors of the judiciary and some media “is even taking on a criminal outline, which calls into question the basic rules of the rule of law”.

On Thursday, the General Secretary of the PSD, Hugo Soares, wrote a letter to the General Prosecutor of the Republic, Lucília Gago, as on Wednesday his party was the target of a judicial operation of “great disproportion” between the acts carried out and the object of the investigation.

The searches also extended to the home of former PSD chairman Rui Rio.

In that letter, Hugo Soares referred that PJ’s searches at national headquarters lasted until 4 a.m. Thursday and targeted “highly relevant information from a democratic point of view,” such as data on militants, records of entries and exits, or strategy documents.

Also following this controversial judicial operation, a group of 30 PSD deputies called for an emergency meeting of the bank on Tuesday to discuss “freedom of party action”, following the PJ’s searches of the national headquarters and home of former President Rui Rio .
