PS deputies deny Isabel Moreira

Isabel Moreira spoke out as “surprised” and “appalled” by the position of a group of socialist deputies – expressed in an op-ed – who challenged gender quota projects in the Constitutional Court (TC), after they were approved in committee by “unanimity” , as reported by DN. Two of the PS deputies attacked by Isabel Moreira have already responded and disputed the socialist’s claims. BE and PAN proposals will go to vote on Wednesday, but threaten to fail.

“Cláudia Santos and Joana Sá Pereira, faced with Isabel Moreira’s statements, devalue them. Were you surprised at us? Is it a gender quota?” reads the statement sent to DN.

“There is no contradiction in the position we took in that article on the common opinion and the way we voted in the Commission, because the opinion we voted in the Commission is only on whether the bill complies with the conditions for debate in the plenary, with rapporteur Isabel Moreira writing that “it is not considered to give an opinion on the concrete model to follow in the implementation of a balanced gender representation in the TC”, they say in the released note.

The communiqué also indicates that “Joana Sá Pereira additionally mentions that contrary to what Isabel Moreira claims, she expressly told her to be against gender quotas in the TC when they talked about the dissemination of opinion”. “Therefore, the statement that he was not aware of the coordinator’s opinion does not correspond to the truth,” the conclusion reads.

Isabel Moreira’s bewilderment arose after an article in the newspaper Público, in which eight PS deputies (Filipe Neto Brandão, Cláudia Santos, Sérgio Sousa Pinto, Joana Sá Pereira, Marcos Perestrello, Susana Correia, Hugo Oliveira and Bruno Aragão) announced who opposed the ” imposition of a gender quota” in the Constitutional Court because the projects are “unconstitutional” and also because, since “justice” is one of the areas “in which women have been given more space”, there is no justification for “need to correct results by the setting quotas”.
