Santos Silva says that the rule of law imposes freedom of political action on parties

The President of the Assembly of the Republic stressed this Wednesday that the rule of law requires the combination of the principles of independence of the judiciary with freedom of political action and the organization of parties and parliamentary groups.

This point of view was put forward by Augusto Santos Silva at the end of a meeting of the leaders’ conference that analyzed the judicial searches carried out last week at the national headquarters of the PSD and at the home of former Social Democratic president Rui Rio – an operation that was considered disproportionate and unjustified by representatives of various political forces.

Augusto Santos Silva delivered three points emerging from the Leaders’ Conference meeting, which he said deserved unanimous support, but he would not reiterate his position after being asked if the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) should clarify the reasons that motivated this controversial operation.

“With regard to the possible use by the PGR of its right to provide clarification to the public opinion, the opinions of the various parties are known, the ongoing decision-making processes are also known and my own opinion is known. Therefore, I have nothing to say say on behalf of the conference of leaders on this aspect,” he justified.

In his opening statement, the president of the Assembly of the Republic tried to expose only the points that deserved unanimity in a conference of leaders.

“These days force us to remember three basic principles of the democratic rule of law that must be combined with each other: the independence of the judiciary; freedom of political action and organization of parties and parliamentary groups; and the separation of powers”emphasized the former foreign minister, referring to the last of the three points agreed between the different banks.
