The Defense Minister assured this Friday that during Marco Capitão Ferreira’s time in government, he never noticed any signs that he has broken the law and has announced an organic restructuring of the Directorate General of Defense Resources.
“While I am not sure of the reasons that led to searches of Professor Marco Capitão Ferreira’s residence, I can assure you that during the period of working with him I have never discovered any indication that the Secretary of State for National Defense did not act in strict compliance with its powers and in compliance with the law,” Helena Carreiras assured.
The minister is being heard in parliament in a joint hearing with the foreign minister and former portfolio holder between 2018 and 2022, João Gomes Cravinho, on the controversy surrounding former ruler Marco Capitão Ferreira, accused of operation ‘Perfect Storm’.
In an initial intervention, the defense minister said she had decided to implement “the organic restructuring of the General Directorate of National Defense Resources”.
“I believe that the merger that took place in the past between two major directorates-general, that of Personnel and Military Recruitment, and that of Armaments and Defense Infrastructure, represented an enormous overburdening of human resources concentrated in a few executive powers, and created risks that need to be mitigated,” the minister insisted.
Helena Carreiras said that the aim of this restructuring is to “return effective direction and control, at the level of the services, in matters as relevant and sensitive as Human Resources, the development of military capabilities and the heritage of National Defence”. .
