The deputy secretary-general of the PS this Wednesday classified as “cheating” the PSD’s tax reform proposals, pointed out “seven deadly sins” to them and stressed that the socialist government has cut taxes and will not accept lessons on this matter.
“For the PS, this series of proposals amounts to misleading the Portuguese men and women,” João Torres said at a press conference at the national headquarters of the PS in Lisbon.
The socialist felt that “the PSD came too late to this debate over the cut of the country’s IRSnoting that the government has “cut taxes every year since 2015”.
João Torres also defended that “the PS does not accept lessons on taxes and IRS reduction of the PSD”.
On Monday, PSD President Luís Montenegro unveiled a “global tax reform program” that includes “five immediate measures,” including a cut later this year in IRS rates at all levels except the last, a measure that would be financed by excess tax revenue.
In response to this package the deputy secretary-general of the PS pointed out “seven deadly sins” to him. “It’s inconsistent, it’s based on a lie about state appropriation of excess tax revenue, it’s excessively regressive, it misleads young people, it doesn’t answer the country’s challenges and productivity problems, it undermines workers’ contributing careers and their social protection.” and limits the actions of the state to respond to situations of an unexpected or exceptional nature,” summed up João Torres.
