Computer hacker says Bolsonaro asked him to hack ballot boxes and take a crime

A computer hacker heard this Thursday in a parliamentary committee investigating coups in Brazil that former President Jair Bolsonaro suggested he hacked into electronic voting machines and asked him to take on an alleged crime against Judge Alexandre de Moraes.

Computer specialist Walter Delgatti told Brazil’s Congress Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) that the former president spoke to him about the risk of an institutional rupture in Brazil if he lost the election and promised him “pardon” if he was found out and arrested for these illegal operations.

“According to him [Bolsonaro]they had gotten a staple [escuta ilegal], which was so expected at the time, by judge Alexandre de Moraes. That there would be compromising calls from the judge and that he needed me to assume authorship of this wiretap.he said.

“[Bolsonaro] pardoned a federal delegate. And how was I with the Spoofing process [operação sobre invasão de telemóveis de autoridades brasileiras] at that time and with the [decisões judiciais] precautions preventing me from accessing the internet and working, I asked for a pardon. And it was offered on the day itself,” he said.

Delgatti said he spoke to the former president about his conviction at a later date. In this conversation, Bolsonaro reportedly said, “Don’t worry, if a judge arrests you, I’ll let the judge arrest you”.

In a tense statement, the cyber pirate also said that the former president and some of his allies and advisers proposed the creation of a fake electronic ballot box to be used in the election campaign.

The idea was to create source code to put in a fake ballot box and simulate the moment of voting. In this case, the voter would pick one candidate but the vote would be registered in another, leading Bolsonaro supporters to believe the electronic voting system was flawed.

Delgatti specified that his meetings with Bolsonaro were brokered by deputy Carla Zambelli, with whom he was working at the time, and that the former president referred him five times to the Defense Ministry to discuss the matter with IT specialists.

According to the hacker, the meetings with Bolsonaro were at the official residence of the presidency and also clarified that during these meetings he explained to the former president that the voting systems could not be violated.

In view of this, Bolsonaro allegedly suggested to Delgatti to create the fake ballot box, which never happened, and also asked him to penetrate the computer networks of the Brazilian judiciary.

The pirate raided the country’s National Prison Monitoring Bank (BNMP) and attached a false arrest warrant to Judge Alexandre de Moraes, president of the Superior Electoral Court of Justice (TSE) and member of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

For leading an election campaign against electronic ballot boxes, which Brazil has used since 1996 without ever recording fraud, Jair Bolsonaro was tried by the TSE last June and stripped of all his political rights for eight years.

However, the central point of the complaint that led to the loss of political rights was a meeting that Bolsonaro convened on July 18, 2022 at the official residence of the Presidency of Brazil with 50 foreign ambassadors to discredit the electoral system.

At that meeting, broadcast on public television, Bolsonaro tried to convince diplomats of alleged fraud with the electronic voting machines and even suggested that Brazil’s electoral justice conspired to favor the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who eventually won the presidential election. won. elections.

The meeting with the ambassadors was yet another move in the campaign against electronic voting machines against which Bolsonaro became even more combative from March 2021, when the STF annulled the corruption proceedings that led to the arrest of Lula da Silva, who has since gone on to lead all election polls to 2022.
