The president of the republic said this Friday that the Council of State will serve on September 5 to end the last meeting, which ended without an announcement of conclusions, and to make an “assessment of the international situation”.
Speaking to TVI in Monte Gordo, in the Algarve, where he is on holiday, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said the meeting of the Council of State he had convened for September 5 will have “two items on the agenda”.
“One is to wrap up the earlier advice [em 21 de julho] and another will be an international situation. That is, a balance of the international situation after taking stock of the national situation, to see how the situation is with regard to the war, the economic crisis, the international economic recovery”he said.
The head of state indicated that it is the intention “a point of situation before entering a period that is crucial for the country and for all countries, namely the state budget”.
Asked about what was ahead of the last meeting of the Council of State in July, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa replied: “There was an intervention from the Prime Minister in progress, if he wants to intervene – he normally intervenes at the councilors’ end – and my closing intervention”.
The president of the republic said that António Costa had to leave early at that meeting because he was to catch a plane – two days later the prime minister was in New Zealand for the Portugal national team’s opening match in the Women’s World Cup – despite his presence in the Council of State “has stretched a lot”.
“It was supposed to leave at 7pm and it practically left at 8pm”he said.
On July 21, the meeting of the Council of State, which lasted about four and a half hours and was devoted to analyzing the economic, social and political situation in the country, ended without the announcement of any conclusions.
The communiqué of the Presidency of the Republic, with one paragraph, said only that “The Council of State, meeting under the Presidency of His Excellency the President of the Republic, today, July 21, 2023, at the Belém Palace in Lisbon, had as its central theme the ‘analysis of the political, economic and social situation’. ‘”.
At the end of the meeting, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stopped at the Sala das Bicas, where some members of the media were, but refused to make any statements.
