The president of the republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, announced on Saturday the transposition of the Community directives on criminal procedure and the European arrest warrant (EAW), which were approved by parliament in July.
The diploma was the result of a final text presented by the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees, following a proposal for a government bill, subsequently receiving votes for PS, PSD, Chega, IL and PAN and abstention from PCP , BE and Livre.
During the general debate, which took place in June, the Minister of Justice, Catarina Sarmento e Castro, rejected criticism from the opposition regarding the delay in transposing these cases into national law.
Among the proposed changes, Catarina Sarmento e Castro also underlined the possibility of extending the deadlines for the implementation of an MDE by another 30 days, informing the authorities of the country that issued the MDE of this situation.
