Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said this Monday in Warsaw, Poland, that he was not simply vetoing the More Housing Program, but hopes time will prove him wrong.
When asked to comment on the position of the PS, which says it will confirm the diploma in the Assembly of the Republic, the head of state says that what is happening… is “democracy”. “The Assembly of the Republic has decided, approved, and I think the opposite. The Parliament remains in place and confirms the vote, and I remain in mine and veto. Let’s wait, in two and a half or three years, and see if it was sufficient or mobilizing”he started telling RTP.
“I hope time doesn’t prove me right. I didn’t veto many diplomas. I vetoed 33 diplomas in 1700”, added.
The president of the republic revealed that he has not yet spoken to António Costa on the subject, but says he will soon be with the prime minister at a summit in São Tomé and Príncipe. “I spoke to the person who had to speak, who is the President of the Assembly of the Republic,” he explained.
As for another diploma, on teachers’ progress, that was adopted, Marcelo calls for dialogue in education and hopes “that the new school year goes well”.
The President of the Republic also highlighted the “very good moment in Poland-Portugal relations”. “There is an increasing crossover between Poles and Portuguese. The Poles are very interested in the Portuguese language, and economically, young Portuguese have come to Poland for large-scale businesses. There are tangible results,” he stressed.
