Chega will schedule a new national convention after the Constitutional Court invalidates the call for the last major rally, and André Ventura will run again for the party’s presidency.
At a press conference at Chega’s national headquarters in Lisbon, the party president announced that the National Directorate had “unanimously decided to initiate the necessary procedures for holding the Sixth Congress”.
“Because I do not leave the ship in the middle of the journey and because I understand that I continue to fulfill the conditions of confidence that the militants have attributed to me, I will be a candidate for the presidency of Chega”said André Ventura, who challenged critics to enter the race and run for office.
Chega’s leader pointed out that this will be Chega’s sixth major gathering in five years, following decisions by the Constitutional Court (TC).
Ventura sharply criticized the actions of the Constitutional Court judges, accusing them of “bad faith” and being a “blocking force”, and also spoke of “persecution” and an attempt to “make the secretariat illegal” .
“Since April 25, a political party has never been so persecuted in court, and we cannot believe that judges appointed by the PS and PSD promote permanent suffocation and a hidden illegalization of their opponent”he accused.
