“Every winner must first be a loser”: Nicolas Sarkozy rebukes the path of Emmanuel Macron

Nicolas Sarkozy attacked his predecessor’s profile on Tuesday in Europe 1. “You cannot understand a country if your body is not covered in scars”, judges the former president, although he indicates that “if it were necessary to do it again”, he would vote “again for Emmanuel Macron”.

Is the end of the love story between Nicolas Sarkozy and the current tenant of the Élysée coming to light? In full promotion of his latest book that covers his years at the Élysée from 2009 to 2011, the former president attacked Emmanuel Macron.

“Any hunter should have been prey first before hunting. Any winner must first be a loser. You cannot understand a country if you don’t have your body covered in scars,” the sixty-year-old launched on Tuesday in Europe 1, asked about the course of the current president by a listener.

Strong criticism of Macron’s support for Ukraine

This suggests that the course of Emmanuel Macron, elected the youngest president of the Republic at only 39 years of age, without ever having held the slightest mandate, is not the most appropriate for the presidential office.

The current head of state, for his part, has always assumed his profile, assuring that becoming a deputy was part of “an honorary course from another era.”

Very close to his predecessor, until he expected an agreement between the Republicans and Macronie during the last presidential campaign, Nicolas Sarkozy has distanced himself from him in recent days.

The former head of state was thus very severe with the choice of the Elysee to arm Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. France is wrong to deliver “a continuous flow of weapons to one of the belligerents”, writes Nicolas Sarkozy in The time of battlescalling for “renew dialogue with Vladimir Putin”.

“If I had to do it again, I would still vote for it”

“It is the duty of the French president to keep the path of dialogue with Russia open,” the president insists again in his new work. “The path of diplomacy and debate was not used until the end,” the former president criticized again on TF1 on August 23.

Proof that these statements embarrassed the Elysee: Emmanuel Macron reacted during a “Crimea Platform” summit, an annual event organized by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to remember Ukrainian sovereignty over the peninsula.

Nicolas Sarkozy, who had called Emmanuel Macron to vote in both 2017 and 2022, does not, however, take away his support.

“Raymond Aron said that politics is the choice between the preferable and the detestable. I chose, I assumed and if I had to do it again, I would still vote for Emmanuel Macron. I did not want Marine Le Pen or Jean-Luc Mélenchon”, advances the former head of the right in Europe 1.

“In power we lock ourselves in”

But it is not about advocating a return to the seven-year term, as proposed by a part of the right, such as Gérard Larcher, or even waiting for the end of the limitation to two successive presidential terms.

“Power is dangerous, you get used to it, it’s a hard drug (…). We lock ourselves in, we don’t listen anymore, we take off from the ground. There has to be an end (to the exercise of power). Democracy is putting an end to the good things,” says Nicolas Sarkozy.

His new book sold 18,500 copies in one week. If the sales are slightly lower than those of his previous works, they are nevertheless higher than those of his successor François Hollande.
