The controversy surrounding the abayas does not cease, and puts an eternal debate on the table: that of school uniforms.
The mayor of Perpignan, Louis Aliot, of the National Rally, proposed on Thursday the creation of a uniform in the city’s schools, believing that this would allow, in particular, to avoid the use of the abaya.
“In the current situation of social fracture, it would not be a bad idea to put some rigor in schools. Wearing a uniform at school would increase the feeling of belonging,” Louis Aliot said at a press conference in Perpignan.
“It is a way to end the race for designer clothes, to reduce extortion and harassment. It is also the way to stop the appearance in schools of religious clothing, such as the abaya,” he added.
It is not an imposed measure but a proposal
The Minister of National Education, Gabriel Attal, announced a ban on this long traditional dress in schools at the beginning of the school year, as well as its male equivalent, the qamis.
For Louis Aliot, “the return of this uniform would allow appeasement, equality and tranquility, both for parents and teachers.”
His statements coincide with those of the mayor of Béziers, Robert Ménard, who had expressed his desire to experiment with the uniform in his city at the beginning of August.
Gabriel Attal was in favor of experimenting with this measure at the end of July “if the educational community of an establishment” requests it.
The mayor of Perpignan also clarified that he did not intend to “impose” the use of the uniform, “only to propose it. Some directors may be in favor, others may not. Some parents ask for it.”
As for the financing of such a measure, “nothing is known”, indicated the press service of the city council.
