The minister of the presidency this Friday called for understanding between the different parties to find solutions for the country. Including housing.
In Ponte da Barca, Viana do Castelo, Mariana Vieira da Silva spoke to 40 young people at Summer CEmp, the summer school of the Portuguese Representation of the European Commission, and when asked about the housing crisis, the government’s number two was clear: “There is no one-size-fits-all solution” to the industry’s problems. So what we can do is put in place a series of mechanisms to deal with the crisis. “We will have the Porta 65 program in place for many years to come,” defended Vieira da Silva as an example of a measure applicable to the sector.
On the same day that António Costa, Prime Minister, sent a letter to the European Commission outlining the government’s priorities for next year, defending a community response to the problem of “shortage and high housing costs”, Mariana Vieira da Silva also took the opportunity to say that this is “a global problem” and that “all tools may be needed” to combat it.
Next to Lindoso Castle, where the sunset this Friday, the minister also took the opportunity to leave calls for political consensus, to solve other problems. Mariana Vieira da Silva defended that she was “for the political debate” and said so, however “There are issues that the country needs to come to terms with”. “There must come a time when we have to make joint decisions, as in the case of the airport or the high-speed trains in the country,” he defended.
“There has been a permanent demand for possible solutions on certain topics for decades,” he said, also considering that “it cannot take 50 years to decide on the location of a new airport”.
“There are issues that we can and should debate politically, but there are others that need to be debated and decided later,” he shot, leaving words to the opposition: “The parties, whether they are in government or not, must feel part of this responsibility to be part of the solution to the country’s structural and communal problems.”
