When asked by journalists about the possibility of UN Secretary-General António Guterres running for president of the republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he was “by far” more concerned about the European elections because they will serve to measure the “pulse of Europe”.
“Populism is on the rise, isn’t it? Can the parties in power oppose it or not? How many Europeanist parties can or cannot stand it? This is more important,” the president of the republic stressed in statements to journalists in São João da Pesqueira, where Vindouro was visited.
After the European elections, the “regional and local elections” are the most important, because “local power is a pillar of democracy,” he added.
As for the legislature, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that “in principle” these will no longer fall under his mandate.
“No one wants to anticipate parliamentary elections, which are scheduled for late 2026,” he added.
