The Council of Ministers approved on Thursday the extension of the temporary exemption from VAT on the food basket until the end of the year.
“The Council of Ministers today approved the draft law that it will now submit to the General Assembly of the Republic, extending the temporary VAT exemption for certain food products until December 31, 2023.”said Presidency Minister Mariana Vieira da Silva in the briefing after the Council of Ministers.
The measure exempting a range of 46 food products from VAT came into effect in April and will now last until the end of the year, as announced by Prime Minister António Costa on Wednesday.
The 46 products in the 0% VAT basket were chosen based on the healthy food basket of the Ministry of Health and data from distribution companies on the products most consumed by the Portuguese. The list did not change with this extension of the measure, which was “established precisely under the conditions in which it was approved”.
From January, the measures to combat inflation will be “developed in the state budget”.
