The Chega leader announced on Friday that the party will submit the draft resolution of the censure motion to the government next Friday the 15th and that it will be discussed on September 19.
During a press conference, André Ventura said that he had had contacts with the President of the Assembly of the Republic and with the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and reported that this date had been agreed in advance “in order to cause as little damage as possible to parliamentary work”. , as the plenary sessions were scheduled for September 20, 21 and 22.
However, since the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly of the Republic provide that the debate on the motion will begin “on the third parliamentary day after the tabling of the motion of censure” – which would postpone the debate until the 20th – there will be unanimity for this term is brought forward.
To this end, a conference of leaders will take place on Friday the 15th, after the text of the motion has been tabled, to organize the debate, which will take precedence over other topics.
André Ventura justified the presentation of the censure motion with “the brutal incompetence and chronic inability of the government”, “the institutional conflict with the President of the Republic” and deficiencies in files such as TAP, housing, health care and legal issues affecting the field of Defense.
Ventura challenged all opposition parties to vote in favor of Chega’s text, even if the PS’s absolute majority is enough to reject it.
“We will not overthrow the government, but we will give the President of the Republic the ammunition he needs so that after the European elections he understands that this government must be removed.”he said.
The Chega president said he has not yet established contacts with the other parties, but admitted that this will happen before the delivery of the text is formalized, leaving a special challenge for the PSD.
“If the PSD votes against, I honestly don’t even know what to say. We will realize that it is no longer the PSD, but a PSD ‘plus one’”” said the leader of Chega, considering that a social democratic abstention will also be a sign of a “loose and weak opposition” against the president of the republic.
For Ventura, the parties that do not vote for this motion “will be the supporters of the PS government”, insisting that this Chega initiative will be “more for the country and for the President of the Republic”.
‘I expect a large parliamentary consensus in the vote in favor of Chega’s motion’he said, despite the party’s previous censure of the government – in July last year – which was rejected with votes against from PS, PCP, BE, PAN and Livre and abstentions from PSD and Liberal Initiative.
