The general secretary of the PS, António Costa, yesterday recalled how “it is not easy to be a socialist in Madeira” and promised to “support the struggle” of all those who want to vote for the PS in an archipelago where the only regional The government has always been the PSD.
“The PS was already government and opposition in the Republic, it was already government and opposition in the Azores, but it never managed to be government in Madeira”, Costa said in his speech in the municipality of Machico, during a session in support of the campaign for the elections that will take place on September 24 in the autonomous region. Still, he promised not to give up. “Election after election,” he declared, the Socialists will continue to present themselves “to the Madeirans and say: they can count on us,” he concluded.
It is not the first time that the PS leader supports the idea that it is difficult to be a socialist in the archipelago. “Madeira does not always love the PS, but the PS loves Madeira,” said António Costa upon the arrival of the party’s Parliamentary Days in June, recalling how difficult it is to win elections in the region.
This time, in response to the social democratic hegemony in Madeira, the Prime Minister has revived the speech he made this week at the beginning of the Socialist Academy in Évora, returning young people to the concerns of the party and the government . The Secretary General of the PS maintained this “what makes the country grow is investments in qualifications and innovation” and that “for this it is essential to put young people at the center of policy”. Therefore, he recalled that from 2024 “for each year of work” each young person will receive a refund “of the amount equal to the tuition fees paid for each year of training. 697 euros in the first, second and third years” , he concluded.
