The Prime Minister stated this Sunday that the Portuguese government will finalize an economic cooperation plan with Mexico by the end of the year, with the port sector and the energy sector as priorities.
António Costa spoke to journalists after a meeting in Santiago de Chile with Mexican President López Obrador, to whom he presented the book “Journey to Portugal” by José Saramago.
“I took advantage of my presence in Chile to meet with Portuguese companies present in this market and for bilateral meetings, namely with the President of Mexico – a country with which we want to intensify cooperation and economic relations. Mexico is a of the largest economies,” he emphasized, noting that this country “faces the Atlantic and the Pacific at the same time.”
According to the leader of the Portuguese government, Mexico “has some common interests with Portugal, especially in the areas of the port and the energy sector.”
“During the meeting, we identified several areas where we can work together to the benefit of both countries,” he said, noting that Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho will travel to Mexico this month.
“We are working so that by the end of the year we have something important to do together. It is a country where many Portuguese companies are active, especially in the construction sector,” said the Prime Minister, before emphasizing that he still completed Mota Engil recently part of a railway project considered one of the largest in the world.
“Mexico is a country with which we want to strengthen relations,” he emphasized, before also highlighting the meeting he subsequently had with national companies present on the Chilean market.
Regarding Chile, António Costa stated that Portuguese investments have grown and economic relations have intensified.
“From the several meetings I have had with President Gabriel Boric, I sensed in him a great desire to strengthen his ties with Portugal. He has great appreciation for the Portuguese companies operating in Chile – and I hope this will develop Chile has the largest reserves of lithium, a fundamental resource for the energy transition,” he stressed.
Tonight, the Prime Minister will be among the guests at a dinner promoted by President Gabriel Boric that will bring together all the heads of state and government who will take part in the ceremonies marking the 50th anniversary of the coup in Chile on Monday.
Also on Monday, but in the afternoon, after the festivities and before returning to Lisbon, António Costa will meet with the President of Chile.
