Chega says the PSD budget package “fails on key points” and heralds a challenge

Chega on Tuesday praised some of the PSD’s initiatives on tax cuts, but believed that they “fail in essence”, and challenged the Social Democrats to take a position on proposals such as an extraordinary contribution to the banking system or tax cuts on fuels.

André Ventura spoke to journalists at the Assembly of the Republic, about an hour after the PSD presented at a press conference the five tax reduction initiatives announced by the party’s president, Luís Montenegro, in mid-August and which will be presented in parliament being discussed. on September 20 – four bills and a draft resolution.

The Chega leader started by saying that he will not hinder the initiatives of the Social Democrats (by voting for some and abstaining from others), as some “have a positive character”, but he understands that the package “ fails in essential terms”. , especially in the field of housing.

Ventura said the party will bring to the debate on the 20th a proposal from Chega that seeks an “extraordinary contribution to the banking system, so that this contribution can be channeled to pay part of the housing loan that families face”, and challenges the PSD to “say yes or no”.

“For us it is unacceptable that when the banks were in trouble, we invested hundreds of millions of euros in it and now that the banks are making a profit, it cannot be used to pay off the mortgage loans of hundreds of thousands of families. This is not a matter of left or right, it is a matter of common sense and I challenge the PSD to say whether it will vote in favor of our proposal or not,” he challenged.

According to the president of Chega, the “PSD reform also fails because it does not touch the fuel issue”, adding that he also wants to include a proposal to reduce taxes on fuel in the debate on the 20th.

On August 18, Chega presented a bill for extraordinary bank profits to finance housing programs through a “temporary solidarity contribution”, arguing that it is an “effective and fair” measure.
